Ignatius Donnelly’s Atlantis: The Antediluvian World (1882) remains one of the most influential pseudo-archaeological works ever written. Donnelly proposed that Plato’s account of Atlantis was historically accurate: a vast island civilization in the Atlantic Ocean, destroyed in a great deluge around 9600 BCE, whose survivors seeded the cultures of Egypt, Mesopotamia, and the Americas. The book’s subtitle— The Antediluvian World —directly links Atlantis to the biblical Flood, suggesting that all ancient civilizations shared a single, drowned origin.

According to Plato, Atlantis was destroyed in a catastrophic event, in which the city was consumed by earthquakes, floods, and tsunamis. The disaster was said to have occurred around 9,000 years before Plato's time, and was attributed to the gods, who were angered by the corruption and greed of the Atlanteans.
