The film follows Albert (Jean-Pierre Marielle), a gynecologist who suddenly abandons his practice, repulsed by the endless demands of female sexuality. He joins a reclusive philosopher, Paul (Jean Rochefort), who has retreated to the countryside with a small library and an intense desire for silence.
