Body positivity originated in the 1960s fat acceptance movement , led largely by Black and queer activists like Bill Fabrey and groups like the Fat Underground. It was initially a fight for civil rights and medical dignity, rather than just "loving your look".
It does not claim that every body is biologically healthy at every size. Rather, it argues that:
Body liberation is the next evolution. It argues that you don't have to love your body to treat it with respect. You don't have to find your "inner goddess" every morning. You simply have to move from hostility to neutrality.
Modern wellness is . It asks: How does my body feel? How is my mental clarity? Do I have the energy to pursue my passions? When you decouple health from a number on the scale, wellness becomes accessible to everyone, regardless of their size. It shifts the goal from "fixing" a perceived flaw to "fueling" a miraculous machine. The Pitfalls of "Performative" Wellness
