In 1841, Solomon Northup, a talented musician and carpenter, was living a relatively comfortable life in upstate New York with his wife and children. However, his life took a drastic turn when he was approached by two white men, James Burch and James Russell, who offered him a job as a musician in New York City. Unbeknownst to Northup, the men were slave traders who had been operating in the area. They kidnapped him, drugged him, and sold him into slavery in Washington, D.C. Northup was given the slave name "Platt" and was forced to spend the next 12 years in bondage, working on plantations in Louisiana.
