But humans being human, not everyone who came to Hedonia left benevolent. Marauders tried to trap the island with chains forged of law, novels were written about capturing paradise, and a syndicate rose called the Proprietors. They were not violent men at first; they were lawyers and architects and investors who loved the idea of a deposit. They built a shipping company and a chapel of consent where men signed forms that promised to always return what they’d taken.
