Initially, Wii games were stored as standard files, which are exact byte-for-byte copies of a game disc. However, because all Wii discs are a standard 4.7GB, even small games like Wii Sports occupied nearly 5GB of space, most of which was "junk data" or filler to keep the disc balanced during rotation.
